so there is a new film (“the imitation game”) about alan turing, the ww2 codebreaker who was gay and ended up being charged with gross indecency because of his sexuality

so you know despite the fact that he was later persecuted bc of his sexuality, this still has the potential to be a pretty cool movie about a person who is gay but is also really intelligent and plays a really important role in breaking a major code during a major war (in other words, not exactly the type of gay character you normally get to see in media!!)

okay well i was lying about it having the potential to be a cool movie

because guess what in this movie they are giving alan turing a female love interest in his fellow codebreaker joan clarke

so actually this is problematic on multiple levels bc as well as the blatant queer erasure of an actual real person, theyre reducing a woman who could potentially be an interesting and intelligent and strong female character to a love interest

what does teddy schwarzmann, the lead producer, have to say about this?

“we don’t want to fictionalise events but there are some creative liberties”

yep thats right you can now excuse queer erasure by calling it a “creative liberty”

they. i. just. THEY FUCKING GAVE ALAN FUCKING TURING A WOMAN LOVE INTEREST? i mean, my own bisexuality and the idea of different-gender relationships being inherently straight aside - cause this is TOTALLY A FUCKING CASE ALL ON ITS OWN.

cause like “persecution” doesn’t even sum up what they fucking did to Alan Turing

like making any known gay person straight is an insult to their fucking memory (and let’s not kid ourselves, they aren’t trying to pretend he’s bisexual)

but Alan Turing was, the year 1952 - aka not even 10 years after the end of the damn war he helped them win by being, as said, ridiculously smart and awesome

in 1952 he was sentenced in a CRIMINAL PROSECUTION to CHEMICAL CASTRATION

they forced him to take female hormones. the alternative option was prison.

and then barely two years later he commited suicide by ingesting cyanide poison.

i mean, the hormone treatments had apparently been discontinued a year previously.

BUT.

straightwashing known gay historical figures is bad enough.

but straightwashing people who were CRIMINALLY PROSECUTED and SENTENCED TO CHEMICAL CASTRATION?
